How to recognize fresh flowers and why quality is crucial for a bouquet that lasts? A brief guide to what we look for every day.

Two bouquets may look similar at first glance, yet differ in how many days they last. The difference is almost always in the freshness and quality of the flowers. When ordering a bouquet, especially for someone else, you want it to look just as beautiful on the third day as it did the moment it was received.

How to recognize fresh flowers

  • Firm stems and petals. Petals should be smooth and taut, without brown edges. The stem should not be soft or slimy at the base.
  • Healthy greenery. The leaves should be bright green, not yellow or wilted. Greenery quickly reveals how the flowers have been stored.
  • Buds that are just opening. For roses and lilies, partially opened flowers mean the bouquet will continue to bloom at home.
  • No unpleasant smell of water. Fresh flowers smell like flowers, not like stagnant water.

Why quality comes at a price

High-quality flowers are grown with care, harvested at the right moment, and stored at the appropriate temperature until they are arranged into a bouquet. Each of these steps extends the life of the flower. That is why a bouquet of high-quality flowers is a better long-term investment than a cheaper one that wilts in two days.

How we choose our flowers

At Mima Florist, we select and inspect our flowers every day. We assemble each bouquet by hand, just before delivery, so that it reaches the recipient in the best possible condition. If a certain variety is not up to standard at that moment, we would rather suggest a similar substitute than send flowers that do not meet our quality criteria.

A final tip

When your bouquet arrives, trim the stems at an angle by a centimeter or two and place it in clean, lukewarm water. This simple step will help the flowers absorb water immediately and stay fresh for longer.
